Biography of Rudolf Hess
Biographical Summary:
- World War I enlisted as an infantryman and was awarded the Iron Cross, second class. He transferred to the Imperial Air Corps and served in an operational squadron at the rank of lieutenant.
- 1920s studied political science, economics and history at the University of Munich
- Member of the secret society Thule which sponsored the establishment of the Nazi Party.
- Imprisoned with Hitler in 1923 after the failed Beer Hall Putsch.
- Hitler's private secretary and editor of Mein Kampf.
- Hitler's Deputy Fuhrer and official successor until his controversial secret flight to Scotland on May 10, 1941 in a futile attempt to negotiate a peace treaty with Britain.
- During the war imprisoned in Britain
- Brought to justice at Nuremberg. Sentenced to life imprisonment.
- Committed suicide in prison in 1987.
