Biography of Ernst Kaltenbrunner

Biographical Summary:

  • Graduated law school 1926.
  • Joined the Austrian Nazi Party 1932.
  • Operated secretly for the unification of Germany with Austria.
  • Arrested by Austrian authorities in 1934 and served six month imprisonment for conspiracy to overthrow Austrian government.
  • Becomes head of the underground Austrian SS in 1935.
  • 1938-1943 high ranking SS and Police official in Austria.
  • January 30. 1943 appointed head of the RSHA - the headquarters of the SD and Gestapo - to replace Reinhardt Heydrich who was assassinated in June 1942.
  • Oversees the culmination of the Final Solution which was planned and undertaken by his predecessor Heydrich since October of 1941.
  • Appointed as a "non-threatening" candidate to his superior, Reichsfuhrer Heinrich Himmler.
  • Scores second lowest IQ among the defendants: 113.
