Biographical Summary:
- Austrian born
- studied law at University of Vienna
- 1914-1917 military service - wounded
- 1921 began practicing law
- 1933-1938 member of Austrian government but secretly a Nazi operative
- 1938 appointed briefly as Chancellor of Austria on the eve of Germany's seizure
- 1938-1939 Reichsstatthalter ("State Head") of the newly incorporated Austria
- 1938 -- honorary rank of Gruppenfuhrer (General) in the SS
- 1938 -- Minister Without Portfolio in German Government
- 1939 -- interim head of occupied Poland
- 1940 - 1945 -- Reichskommissar of the Netherlands
- responsible for anti-Jewish measures in Austria and in Poland during his brief governorship
- responsible for the murder of Jews and opposition in the Netherlands during his governorship
