Biographical Summary:

  • Austrian born
  • studied law at University of Vienna
  • 1914-1917 military service - wounded
  • 1921 began practicing law
  • 1933-1938 member of Austrian government but secretly a Nazi operative
  • 1938 appointed briefly as Chancellor of Austria on the eve of Germany's seizure
  • 1938-1939 Reichsstatthalter ("State Head") of the newly incorporated Austria
  • 1938 -- honorary rank of Gruppenfuhrer (General) in the SS
  • 1938 -- Minister Without Portfolio in German Government
  • 1939 -- interim head of occupied Poland
  • 1940 - 1945 -- Reichskommissar of the Netherlands
  • responsible for anti-Jewish measures in Austria and in Poland during his brief governorship
  • responsible for the murder of Jews and opposition in the Netherlands during his governorship
  • second highest IQ score among Nuremberg defendants: 141
